Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system
that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived
from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century. It
teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger,
stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by
applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi)
and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self defense. Sparring
(commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training,
and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in
relation to progress and ascension through the grades/belts.
NORTHEAST BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU / TEAM ALLIANCE instructors Jesse Bruchac [bio] and Jim Bruchac [bio] are lifelong martial
artists. They both were awarded their BJJ black belts by Alliance founder Romero Jacare Cavalcanti. They continue to train Marcelo Garcia at his academy in NYC on a regular basis. This is done to both improve their own knowledge and ability and more importantly allow them to become better instructors.
NEBJJ CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals (Adult & Teen)
With a strong focus on self-defense, our fundamental class incorporates the same jiu jitsu first taught at the original Gracie academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the 1960’s. The class is designed to prepare students for both self-defense, and sport jiu jitsu while at the same time improving cardiovascular endurance, balance, and coordination. Class format consists of the following; a light warm-up, 2-3 techniques are shown, and finally several drills are performed. The drills are our secret to successful teaching, and are equivalent to sparing for beginners, but are done with little resistance to reinforce proper technique. There is very little, to no full-contact sparring in the fundamental class. Our founders, Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti and Fabio Gurgel believe this is key in the evolution of beginning jiu jitsu students. Three month class, offered three times a week. If you ever wanted to learn basic Jiu-jitsu in a safe, family environment this is the class for you! For children ages 7-12 check out our Kyokushin kids classes which offer a combination of both Kyokushin and BJJ Fundamentals.
